We have all heard about the Paleo Diet at some point. It’s the diet that suggests eating only what our caveman ancestors ate. In a nutshell, you avoid all grains, beans and tubers. You can eat meats, veggies, fruits, nuts and seeds. That’s the basics.
This diet does work, and it works well. However, the reason this diet works has nothing to do with avoiding grains and beans. It has to do with the fact that by eliminating grains and beans and tubers, you have NO CHOICE but to combine your foods properly! Proper food separation dictates keeping starches (potatoes, grains, beans and bread) away from meats or proteins. Combining these two food groups’ results in very poor digestion, fermentation of undigested food, gas, heartburn, poor skin and weight gain.
When you avoid eating these food groups together, your body is better able to digest and extract all the nutrients from the meal. When your body is allowed to digest foods the right way (separate), you will feel more satisfied with the meal, and weight loss will be much easier. This is not my opinion; this is simply how your body works.
I don’t buy into this nonsense that grains are harmful and should not be eaten. That’s simply is not true. Civilizations have existed since the beginning of time and continue to exist today on diets high in whole grains. What’s even more interesting is that many of these civilizations are free from the disease that plaque this country! No heart disease, no cancer, no diabetes, etc. ect.
If grains are so harmful, how can these people enjoy such robust health? The answer is simple. Whole grains are not harmful!
In fact, I recently lost 16 lbs in 9 weeks while eating lentils everyday and having a beer everyday! Both of which are considered grains or beans.
Processed (think white flour, etc) grains, ARE a problem and are harmful to the human body, and should not be eaten at all. This is another reason for the success of the Paleo Diet. It actually forces you to eliminate all harmful processed grains because all grains are not allowed (whole or processed). Naturally, you will lose weight when you eliminate all processed grains and replace them with fruits and vegetables. Does this really surprise anyone?
Listen, despite what you have been told, your bodies primary fuel source is glucose. In fact, your brain uses glucose exclusively. You need glucose, and you should not worry about eating whole grains or beans. Just don’t eat them with meats.
I have lost weight and remained fit and healthy by eating meals like:
- Lentils with wild rice, squash, mushrooms, peppers, carrots, onions and spices
- Chicken with grilled asparagus
- Grilled vegetables on whole grain chibatta roll.
- Salmon with roasted broccoli and sautéed spinach.
- Portabella burger with onions, tomato and Dijon mustard
- Wild rice with peas, broccoli rabe, peppers and zucchini
Bottom line; do not be afraid of whole grains, beans and tubers. Just don’t eat them with meats and don’t eat the processed version!
